If you’re dreaming of an intimate wedding where you don’t have to choose between incredible mountain views and celebrating with the people you love most, B + R’s Indigo House elopement is a great example of how you can have both.
Rather than planning everything around a single day, they rented Indigo House for several nights so they and their families could stay together before and after the wedding. Their ceremony took place overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains before everyone returned to the house for cocktails, lawn games, an incredible private chef dinner, and heartfelt toasts around one long table.
It was the kind of wedding that reminded me why I love intimate celebrations so much. There was plenty of time to enjoy the mountains, but just as much time to simply be together.
What Makes Indigo House Perfect for an Intimate Wedding?
One of the reasons I love recommending Indigo House is that it doesn’t feel like a traditional wedding venue. It feels like a place where everyone can settle in for a few days and actually enjoy each other’s company.
Located in Afton, Virginia, this modern, pet-friendly bed and breakfast is close to some of my favorite Blue Ridge Parkway ceremony locations, making it easy to combine a mountain ceremony with a relaxed celebration back at the house.
I think that’s what makes it so unique. Instead of everyone rushing in for the ceremony and leaving after dinner, your closest family and friends can spend several days together. The wedding becomes part of the experience instead of being the only event.

Getting Ready at Indigo House
The morning started with one of Indigo House’s homemade seasonal breakfasts. Fresh pastries, fruit, quiche, and coffee gave everyone a chance to gather around the table before getting ready, and it set such a relaxed tone for the rest of the day.
After breakfast, everyone spread out through the house to get ready while I documented all of the little moments happening in each room. Indigo House has beautiful natural light throughout, which made it an easy place to photograph without ever feeling like we had to search for the “perfect” spot.

A First Look Before the Ceremony
Before making the drive to the ceremony, B + R shared a first look outside Indigo House.
Their families gave them a little space while they saw each other for the first time, and a few minutes later everyone piled into their cars and headed toward the Blue Ridge Parkway together.
I always enjoy moments like this because they help the day ease into the ceremony instead of jumping straight into it.

Where Can You Have a Ceremony Near Indigo House?
For B + R, Raven’s Roost was the perfect fit.
One of the reasons I often recommend it for couples including family is that you still get incredible mountain views without asking everyone to hike several miles. The walk from the parking area is short, which makes it accessible while still feeling like you’re surrounded by nature.
After the ceremony, we spent some time exploring the overlook for family photos and portraits before heading back to Indigo House.
One thing I’ve learned after photographing a lot of intimate weddings is that couples almost never wish they had packed more into the day. They remember having time to hug their families, enjoy the scenery, and actually experience everything that was happening around them. That’s exactly how this day felt.

Cocktails, Bocce, and a Private Chef Dinner
Back at Indigo House, cocktail hour blended naturally into the rest of the evening.
Some family members grabbed a drink while others started a game of bocce. Nobody was watching the clock or wondering what came next. People simply enjoyed spending time together while dinner was being prepared.
Private chef Josh Rossiter of Bourbon Chef Events created an incredible meal that everyone shared around one long table.
Honestly, I wish more couples considered this kind of reception.
Instead of spending dinner making the rounds to every table, B + R were able to sit down, eat with their families, and actually be part of the conversations happening around them.
As dinner came to an end, their families shared stories, laughter, and a few emotional toasts. It felt less like a formal reception and more like a dinner party celebrating two people everyone loved.

Should You Stay at Indigo House for Your Wedding?
After photographing B + R’s wedding, I think what makes Indigo House stand out isn’t just the property itself. It’s what staying there allows your wedding to become.
So many weddings feel rushed because everything has to happen in one day. Indigo House gives you the opportunity to stretch the celebration out a little. Maybe that’s arriving a day early, sharing breakfast before the wedding, or lingering over coffee the next morning before everyone heads home.
Those are the moments that often end up meaning just as much as the ceremony itself.
If spending time with your favorite people is one of your biggest priorities, I think Indigo House is one of the best places in Virginia to make that happen.

Planning Your Own Indigo House Elopement
If you’re planning an Indigo House elopement, I’d encourage you to think beyond the ceremony itself.
Maybe you’ll spend a few nights together, hire a private chef instead of hosting a traditional reception, or start your wedding morning with a slow breakfast before heading into the mountains.
One of my favorite things about intimate weddings is that they give you permission to build the day around what matters most to you instead of following a timeline that someone else created.
If you’re still in the early stages of planning, I’ve put together a few resources that might help. You can learn more about working with me as your Virginia elopement photographer, get ideas for planning an elopement with family, or find everything you need to know about how to legally get married in Virginia.
No matter what your day looks like, my goal is to help you create an experience that feels relaxed, meaningful, and completely like you.
