How Many Hours Do You Need for an Elopement? Why a Full-Day Experience Is Worth It

August 2, 2026

One of the most common questions couples ask me is, How many hours do we actually need for our elopement?”

At first, eight hours can sound like a lot. If you’re picturing a short ceremony followed by a few portraits, you might be wondering what you’d even do with the rest of the day.

The truth is, an elopement doesn’t have to be over in an hour or two. One of the biggest reasons couples choose to elope is because they want a wedding day that feels less like a schedule and more like an experience. Instead of rushing from one event to the next, you have the time to slow down, explore somewhere beautiful, share meaningful moments together, and actually enjoy the day you’ve spent months planning.

That’s why I love full-day elopements. It’s not about taking photos for eight straight hours. It’s about giving yourselves the gift of time. Time to breathe, time to celebrate, and time to be fully present with each other. By the end of the day, you’ll have incredible photographs, but even more importantly, you’ll have memories of a wedding day that truly felt like your own.

An Elopement Is More Than a Ceremony

When couples first start planning an elopement, it’s easy to focus on the ceremony itself. But the truth is, your wedding day is about so much more than the fifteen or twenty minutes you spend exchanging vows. It’s the quiet morning drinking coffee together before you get dressed, the excitement of seeing each other for the first time, the drive through winding mountain roads, and the moments when you pause to take in where you are.

Those are often the memories couples talk about long after the wedding is over. A full-day elopement gives those moments room to happen naturally instead of squeezing everything into a few short hours.

Fill Your Day With Things You Actually Love Doing

One of my favorite parts of helping couples plan their elopements is brainstorming activities that make the day feel uniquely theirs. Your wedding doesn’t have to follow a traditional schedule. Instead, it can be built around the things you already love doing together.

Whether that’s hiking to a mountaintop, kayaking across a quiet lake, sharing tacos after your ceremony, wandering through a cute mountain town, enjoying a private chef dinner, or simply sitting together to watch the sunset, those moments become part of your story. They’re often the moments couples remember most because they’re not just celebrating their marriage, they’re creating an experience they’ll never forget.

What Could Your Wedding Day Look Like?

One of the biggest misconceptions about an elopement is that there’s a “right” timeline. The truth is, every wedding day I photograph looks a little different because every couple has different priorities. Some want to start the day with a slow morning at their cabin, while others can’t wait to hit the trail before sunrise. Some dream of including family for the ceremony, while others want the entire day to be just the two of them.

The beauty of a full-day elopement is that your timeline is built around your vision, not the other way around. Instead of trying to fit everything into a few rushed hours, we have the flexibility to create a day that flows naturally, leaving room for spontaneous moments, unexpected adventures, and plenty of time to simply enjoy being together.

Is a Full-Day Elopement Right for You?

A full-day elopement isn’t the right fit for every couple, and that’s okay. If your dream is to exchange vows and keep things simple, a shorter timeline may be all you need. but if you’re picturing a day that’s about more than the ceremony, a full-day experience gives you the space to create something truly memorable.

With a full day you can explore more than one location, include activities you genuinely enjoy, invite family for part of the day, or simply leave room to slow down and soak it all in. Instead of feeling like you’re racing from one moment to the next, you’ll have time to be present and enjoy every part of your celebration.

If your goal is a wedding day that feels relaxed, intentional, and completely your own, a full-day elopement might be exactly what you’re looking for.

It is Not About More Hours. It is About More Memories.

One of the biggest misconceptions about a full-day elopement is that you’ll spend eight hours taking photos.

In reality, it’s just the opposite.

The extra time isn’t there to fill your gallery with more images. It’s there to give you the freedom to enjoy your wedding day without watching the clock. Instead of rushing from your ceremony to portraits, you have time to hike to that overlook you’ve been dreaming about, linger over dinner, watch the sunset, or simply sit together and take in the fact that you just got married.

And don’t worry…I’ll still be taking a whole lot of photos. Just not in the way you might be imagining. While you’re busy living your wedding day, I’ll be documenting it all as it naturally unfolds. The big moments, the quiet moments, the happy tears, the belly laughs, and all of the little in-between moments you didn’t even realize were happening. Those are often the images couples end up loving the most.

Years from now, you probably won’t remember exactly how many hours your photographer was there. You’ll remember how the day felt, the moments you shared, and the memories you created together. That’s what makes a full-day elopement so special.
