Where to Elope in Pennsylvania

Here’s a round up of my recommendations:

Hickory Run State Park – Boulder Fields & Waterfall Trails

Hickory Run State Park offers two completely different, but equally stunning, backdrops for an elopement. On one end, you have Hawk Falls, a 25-foot waterfall surrounded by mossy rocks and lush forest – the perfect romantic setting for a nature-focused ceremony. On the other, there’s the park’s famous Boulder Field, a vast expanse of glacier-deposited rocks that stretches for over 16 acres. It’s a surreal and striking spot for adventurous couples who want something unique in their wedding photos.

Elopement idea: Begin your day with a peaceful ceremony by Hawk Falls, then change into hiking shoes and head to the Boulder Field for some epic, out-of-the-ordinary portraits. In the fall, add in a short hike along one of Hickory Run’s leaf-lined trails for a colorful seasonal touch.

Pennsylvania Grand Canyon (Pine Creek Gorge) – Mountain Views for Miles

The Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania, officially the Pine Creek Gorge, offers epic panoramic views that will make your elopement feel truly monumental. Carved deep into the mountains of Tioga State Forest, the gorge has steep forested walls and a ribbon of river at the bottom. At Leonard Harrison State Park, you can stand at the Overlook Trail viewpoint and gaze out at the vast canyon – a perfect natural altar for your ceremony. Across the way at Colton Point State Park, additional overlooks offer sweeping vistas into the canyon’s depths, especially beautiful in autumn when the hills blaze with fall colors. If you’re an adventurous duo, consider hiking part of the Turkey Path down into the gorge – you’ll pass by waterfall cascades on the way, like Little Four Mile Run Falls, adding to the experience.

Elopement idea: Ride bikes together on the Pine Creek Rail Trail along the canyon floor after your vows, or rent a canoe and float on Pine Creek beneath the towering cliffs for a post-ceremony adventure you’ll never forget.

Ricketts Glen State Park – One of the Most Magical Places to Elope in Pennsylvania

If you dream of saying “I do” surrounded by waterfalls and ancient forests, Ricketts Glen State Park is a fairytale come to life. This park’s Glens Natural Area is famous for its 22 named waterfalls, each cascading through rocky clefts in an old-growth forest. The tallest, Ganoga Falls, plunges 94 feet, filling the woods with the sound of rushing water. Imagine exchanging vows at the base of a waterfall or on a mossy creekside trail – the atmosphere is unbelievably magical. With over 20 miles of hiking paths connecting the falls, you and your partner can don hiking boots and venture into the woods for an unforgettable elopement adventure.

Elopement idea: Plan a weekday sunrise ceremony by your favorite waterfall (to avoid any crowds), then celebrate with a picnic by Lake Jean or a stroll across one of the park’s rustic wooden bridges as you begin your married journey amid nature’s splendor.

Jim Thorpe – Pennsylvania’s Most Beautiful Small Town

If your vision of eloping includes a storybook town setting (with a side of mountain scenery), Jim Thorpe, PA should be on your radar. Nicknamed “America’s Switzerland” for its picturesque location in the Lehigh Gorge, this Victorian-era town overflows with charm. In fact, Architectural Digest voted Jim Thorpe the “Most Beautiful Small Town in Pennsylvania”– and it’s easy to see why. Colorful 19th-century facades line the hilly streets, there are cozy B&Bs and cafes at every turn, and the scenery of steep wooded mountains hugs the town on all sides. For your elopement, you have options: say your vows on the platform of the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway (with an antique train as your backdrop), or find a quiet spot in the Asa Packer Mansion gardens overlooking the town. Adventurous couples could even hike up to Flagstaff Mountain Overlook for a panoramic view of Jim Thorpe’s rooftops and the winding Lehigh River below – a stunning spot for a private ceremony. Afterward, stroll hand-in-hand through town, grab some ice cream or a pint at a local pub, and revel in the celebratory vibes of this friendly, historic community.

Elopement idea:Arrange for a ride on the vintage train after your ceremony. Back in town, take romantic portraits by the quaint stone bridge or under the gaslit street lamps at dusk, capturing the timeless feel of Jim Thorpe as the first backdrop of your married life.

Ohiopyle State Park – Adventure in the Laurel Highlands

Tucked in southwestern PA’s Laurel Highlands, Ohiopyle State Park is a paradise for adventurous elopements. This park boasts acres of rugged beauty – think emerald forests, mountain laurel blooms in summer, and the Youghiogheny River Gorge cutting through it all with rushing whitewater. For a dramatic ceremony spot, you could choose Cucumber Falls, a stunning 30-foot waterfall that pours into a natural amphitheater of rock. Or perhaps you’ll say your vows on a peaceful trail overlooking the river rapids. Ohiopyle is also famous for its outdoor activities: after a heartfelt exchange of vows, you could go whitewater rafting on the Yough (a thrill for adventure lovers!), or take a scenic bike ride on the Great Allegheny Passage trail which runs through the park. From the roar of waterfalls to quiet fern-lined glades, Ohiopyle offers a mix of excitement and serenity.

Elopement idea: Make it a full-day adventure – have a morning ceremony by the falls, enjoy a cozy lunch at a local cafe in the nearby town, then spend the afternoon kayaking or hiking to a secluded overlook for sunset portraits.

Cherry Springs State Park – Stargazing Under the Milky Way

For a night-time twist on your elopement, Cherry Springs State Park in north-central PA delivers an awe-inspiring celestial backdrop. This remote 82-acre park is consistently rated one of the seven best places on the planet for stargazing thanks to its exceptionally dark skies. On a clear night, up to 30,000 stars sparkle above. Imagine exchanging vows under a canopy of stars – perhaps even timing it during a meteor shower so that shooting stars bless your ceremony! The park has open fields specifically for astronomy, so it’s perfect for laying down a blanket and gazing up at the universe with your new spouse. (It’s hard to think of a more romantic “ceiling” for your wedding night.)

Elopement idea: Have a very intimate ceremony just after dusk, with lanterns or candles, then snuggle up for a stargazing picnic. You might even catch the glow of the Milky Way or a glimpse of the Northern Lights if you’re lucky. For nature-loving couples who feel most alive under the night sky, Cherry Springs offers an absolutely magical experience.

Cook Forest State Park – Enchanted Old-Growth Forest

For couples who feel most at home among towering trees and the smell of pine, Cook Forest State Park in northwestern PA provides an enchanting woodland venue. This park is famous for the Forest Cathedral, a stand of ancient white pines and hemlocks that rise over 180 feet tall and have stood for centuries. Getting married beneath these giants, with sunlight filtering through the lofty canopy, is nothing short of magical. The forests here have a hushed, almost reverent atmosphere – perfect for an intimate exchange of vows with just you, your love, and the gentle whisper of the wind through the leaves. Beyond the trees, Cook Forest also features the wild and scenic Clarion River flowing by, plus mossy glens and fern-carpeted trails that make beautiful photo backdrops. You might find a natural “aisle” in the woods or even use one of the historic stone shelters as a rustic ceremony spot.

Elopement idea: Consider a morning ceremony in the Forest Cathedral when mist often rises between the trees, adding a fairytale feel. Afterward, head down to the Clarion River for a celebratory canoe ride or simply sit on a riverbank together, dangling your feet in the water.

Presque Isle State Park – Beachfront Place to Elope in Pennsylvania

Yes, Pennsylvania has beaches! On the shores of Lake Erie in the far northwest corner of the state, Presque Isle State Park offers sandy beaches and legendary sunsets that might make you forget you’re not on the ocean. Presque Isle is a 3,200-acre sandy peninsula curving into the lake, creating several beaches on its leeward side. Eloping here means you can literally get married with your toes in the sand and waves lapping at the shore. Sunset Point beach is a favorite spot for vows at golden hour – it provides unparalleled, unobstructed views of the sun sinking into Lake Erie. The sky often erupts in vibrant colors, and many say Erie’s are among the most breathtaking sunsets in the world For a nature-loving couple, a beach elopement at Presque Isle can be both laid-back and awe-inspiring: gulls flying overhead, beach grass gently swaying, and that expansive lake view in front of you.

Elopement idea: Time your ceremony for about an hour before sunset on the beach. After the vows, take a leisurely walk to the lighthouse on Presque Isle or along one of the park’s boardwalk trails for photos. Then enjoy a simple lakeside picnic as the sun sets, painting the sky in spectacular oranges and purples. You could even arrange a sunset sailboat ride from a nearby marina as a just-married celebration – a peaceful glide on the water to start your new adventure together.

Honorable Mentions: Additional Pennsylvania Elopement Locations

The great news about planning an elopement in Pennsylvania is that there are sooo many incredible options you could choose from!

Here are some other amazing elopement locations that I wanted to make sure didn’t get left out of this blog –

Securing your permits

For an elopement in Pennsylvania, ceremonies are typically permitted in the state parks, but they do require pre-approval from the park office. If you want to elope in one of the parks I’ve listed in this blog, you need to contact the state park where you are interested in having the ceremony and make sure you follow the rules and regulations they lay out for you.

By the way, if you don’t want to stress about securing permits, working with an elopement photographer/planner (like me) will make this process so much easier. As your elopement planner/photographer, I will help you secure your permits, scout the best locations, plan your timeline, and more so you can have the best elopement experience possible!
