Hickory Run State Park Wedding – A Family-Filled Elopement Adventure

October 14, 2025

When a couple decides to elope, it doesn’t always mean running away to say “I do” in secret. Sometimes, it means crafting a day that’s deeply personal — full of laughter, tears, adventure, and the people who matter most.

That’s exactly what this Hickory Run State Park elopement was all about.

Surrounded by their six children (the bride’s three sons and the groom’s three daughters) and their closest family, this couple created a celebration that blended intimacy, meaning, and adventure — right in the heart of one of Pennsylvania’s most stunning state parks.

A Ceremony Beneath the Trees at Hickory Run

Their day began outside the small chapel in Hickory Run State Park, a peaceful spot tucked among towering trees. The couple exchanged heartfelt vows surrounded by their kids and family — and let’s just say there wasn’t a dry eye in sight.

The couple exchanged personal vows that had everyone alternating between laughter and tears. The groom even sang a bit of the Adam Sandler song “I want to grow old with you. Every promise felt deeply intentional, a reflection not just of their relationship, but of the family they were building together.

They also included a simple rope braiding ceremony, a quiet nod to the idea of two lives becoming one. When the vows were finished, their kids and immediate families cheered, rushing in for hugs and happy tears. It was joyful, genuine, and exactly what an elopement day should feel like — full of heart, connection, and meaning.

A Hike to Hawk Falls

After family photos the couple and I made our way down the Hawk Falls Trail — a short but scenic hike that leads to a cascading waterfall surrounded by moss-covered rocks and forest greenery.

It was the perfect way for them to slow down, breathe, and take in the day together. The trail gave them space to reflect and connect after such an emotional ceremony.

At the base of the falls, they held each other close and let the sound of the rushing water fill the space. I always tell my couples, moments like these are what make adventure elopements so special. You don’t need grand decorations or timelines. You just need a moment to be still together.

The Slowest Volvo and the Boulder Field

Now, no wedding day is complete without at least one funny story, right?

On the way to the Hickory Run Boulder Field, we somehow found ourselves behind the slowest Volvo SUV in history. I’m talking 4 miles per hour in a 25 zone — crawling our way down the road like we were in a parade of patience.

By the time we reached the boulder field, we were laughing about it. The massive, otherworldly landscape of glacial rocks spread out for acres — it’s one of the most unique backdrops in Pennsylvania, and it fit this couple’s adventurous spirit perfectly.

We hopped from boulder to boulder, capturing photos that felt both rugged and romantic. It was such a fun way to end our time at the park.

A Stop to Honor Family

On our way from the park to the reception, we made an important stop at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery — a meaningful detour to honor the groom’s grandfather.

It was a quiet, powerful moment. He wanted to pay tribute before heading to the celebration, and it was the kind of pause that reminded everyone what the day was truly about — family, legacy, and love that carries through generations.

The Reception: A Celebration with Everyone They Love

After exploring Hickory Run and honoring family history, the couple headed to their reception, where 70 of their closest friends and loved ones were waiting to celebrate.

They entered the room to cheers and hugs, immediately surrounded by joy. The couple danced with each of their children — a beautiful way to symbolize the blending of their families — and there wasn’t a dry eye in sight during the groom’s daughter’s emotional toast.

From there, the night turned into pure celebration. The dance floor stayed full, the laughter got louder, and everyone soaked in the kind of happiness that only happens when love feels like home.

Why Hickory Run State Park is Perfect for Family Elopements

If you’re dreaming of an elopement that mixes adventure and family connection, Hickory Run State Park is a hidden gem in Pennsylvania.

Here’s why it works so well:

  • Beautiful variety: Waterfalls, forests, and the famous boulder field give you multiple backdrops in one location.
  • Accessibility: It’s easy for guests and families to join part of the day (like the ceremony) while you still sneak away for an adventure together.
  • No heavy crowds: Outside of peak weekends, the park stays relatively quiet — ideal for couples who want a peaceful, nature-filled ceremony.
  • Flexible permits: The park typically allows small ceremonies with a simple event permit — no complicated red tape.

It’s the perfect middle ground for couples who want the intimacy of an elopement but the warmth of a family celebration.

A Note on Blending Families and Love

This day was a beautiful reminder that weddings don’t have to fit a template. They don’t have to be all-or-nothing — just the two of you or a 200-person guest list.

This couple built a day that felt true to them: a ceremony with their kids, a hike through the forest, a quiet moment of remembrance, and a huge dance party to end it all.

That’s what eloping (or any intentional wedding) is really about — creating space for the things that matter most.
