A Virginia Micro Wedding with Family, Mountain Views, and a Private Chef

July 1, 2025

There are some wedding days that unfold so perfectly — not because everything goes exactly as planned, but because they feel completely and beautifully right. Molly and Porter’s Virginia micro wedding was one of those days.

Surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, a few passing storms, and the people who mean the most to them, these two shared an intimate and emotional celebration that blended cozy Airbnb moments, Shenandoah views, a Private Chef prepared dinner, and one very memorable dash through the rain.

Getting Ready at the Airbnb in Luray

Molly and Porter chose to spend their wedding day surrounded by immediate family — just their parents, siblings, and sweet little nephews. They stayed in a beautiful Airbnb tucked into the hills of Luray, Virginia, with plenty of space and one incredible wraparound porch (more on that in a second!).

There’s something really special about getting ready in a house that feels like home. No hotel lobbies, no timeline stress — just the sound of coffee brewing, kids laughing in the background, and sisters zipping up dresses in the bedroom down the hall. The house was full of life and anticipation, and you could feel how close this family is.

As the final touches were coming together, clouds started rolling in and the rain began to fall — not exactly ideal for a first look. But luckily, that big front porch came to the rescue.

A Rainy First Look and Porch-Side Portraits

The couple shared their first look tucked under the shelter of the porch. There’s something so cinematic about hearing the rain fall around you while you see each other for the first time on your wedding day. It was quiet, sweet, and deeply emotional — exactly the kind of moment that makes small weddings so powerful.

And then, as quickly as it came, the rain stopped. We stepped out for portraits around the Airbnb property, and the soft light and misty skies made everything feel calm and romantic. From laughing in the driveway to slow walks through the wet grass, Molly and Porter just radiated joy.

The Ceremony at Jewell Hollow in Shenandoah

After portraits, we drove into Shenandoah National Park for their ceremony at Jewell Hollow Overlook. This spot is such a gem — easy to access, but with sweeping views of the mountains and sky that make it feel incredibly expansive.

Their ceremony was small, but full of love. Standing with the people who raised them and grew up alongside them, Molly and Porter exchanged vows with mist clinging to the mountains in the background. It was the kind of moment you wish you could bottle up and keep forever — quiet, emotional, and surrounded by so much love.

Just in Time

Right after the ceremony, we started family photos. The clouds were building again, but everyone was in such good spirits that we kept going. As we wrapped up the last portraits of Molly and Porter, the wind picked up, the sky turned charcoal gray — and then the skies opened.

It started POURING. Not a light drizzle or a slow mist — a full, torrential downpour. We sprinted to the car laughing the whole way, soaked and smiling. One of my favorite things about working with couples like Molly and Porter is how they roll with whatever the day brings — and this moment ended up being one of the most memorable of the day.

An Intimate Reception Back at the Airbnb in Luray

Once we dried off and made our way back to the Airbnb, the magic continued. A private chef had come to prepare a beautiful, locally-inspired meal for the group, and the entire dining area was transformed.

The tablescape was breathtaking — a moody, elegant blend of rich colors and natural textures that felt both grounded and luxurious. Molly and her two sisters designed every detail by hand, with one sister contributing blooms straight from her own flower farm. Deep burgundy and plum florals mingled with vibrant greens, delicate purples, and earthy moss, all arranged in lush, organic centerpieces that ran the length of the table. Taper candles in jewel tones added height and glow, flickering softly in gold holders. Each place setting featured a bold gold sunburst charger topped with a celestial-themed menu card and finished with a deep red napkin, creating a look that was artful, thoughtful, and completely personal — the perfect extension of their day.

As dinner was served, everyone gathered around the table, shared stories and toasts, and truly celebrated. There were so many beautiful moments — from the heartfelt speeches to the soft candlelight flickering as the sun went down. They cut their cake, laughed with their nephews, and soaked in every bit of the day together.

What Made This Virginia Micro Wedding Day So Special

Molly and Porter’s wedding was the perfect example of how meaningful a micro wedding can be. It didn’t require a big guest list or a packed dance floor — it was about presence, not production. It was about a couple choosing to get married in a way that felt like them, in a place that felt peaceful, with the people they love most in the world.

It was about laughter under porches and vows in the mountains. About running through the rain and toasting with your favorite people. About being fully present on your wedding day.

This is why I love photographing elopements and micro weddings in Virginia — especially in places like Shenandoah and Luray. The landscapes are stunning, yes, but it’s the energy of these intimate celebrations that make them unforgettable.
