Unique Elopement Ceremony Ideas
Personal Vows
Think about this: you and your partner at sunrise/sunset in a field surrounded by wildflowers and mountains or standing next to a scenic overlook reading vows you wrote just for each other. How magical does that sound?
If you and your partner feel drawn to write personal vows, consider reading them privately before the ceremony or sharing them during the vows portion of the ceremony itself.
Your vows don’t have to follow any specific rules—whether you keep them short and sweet, pour your heart out with something long and meaningful, or add some humor to lighten the mood, what matters most is that they reflect who you are as a couple. As you write your vows, think about the journey you’ve shared and the commitment you’re making to one another as you take this next step in your marriage.
Pro tip: be sure to get vow books! Vow books are a meaningful way to hold onto your vows forever.

Handfasting
Handfasting is another unique element you can add to your elopement, and anyone can take part in the tradition. This is an ancient Celtic ritual in which your and your partner’s hands are tied together to symbolize the binding of your lives. Your officiant can perform the handfasting ceremony, or if you’re going to have guests at your elopement, a family member or sibling can help the celebrant tie the knot.
So, what materials should you use? Cords, ribbons, or sentimental clothing all work! You and your partner can even personalize the cords, or you can add charms that are meaningful to your relationship.

Tree planting
Tree planting is a significant way to symbolize the foundation of a strong, enduring marriage. This ceremony is much more than buying a tree and planting it in the ground. It is a visual representation of your commitment and love for each other.
You can pick out a tree that holds meaning for you and your partner and even come back and visit your tree on future anniversaries.
How do you have a tree-planting ceremony? You can start by having your officiant explain the symbolism and meaning of planting your tree, and they can read a short poem or say a blessing. Then, you’ll add soil and water to the pot, and you can express what this ceremony means to both of you. Next, you’ll lift the small tree and place it in the hole you’ve dug. To conclude the ritual, you will water the tree, read your own poem, or share your own blessing.

Ring warming
Ring warming is a heartfelt tradition that originated in Ireland and is a perfect addition to your elopement ceremony.
Here’s how it works: you and your partner pass your wedding bands around to all your guests; when guests receive the rings, they “warm” them up. They can say a positive affirmation, make a wish, or say a prayer before handing the ring to the next guest.
Ring warming can take place at any time during your wedding ceremony, but it’s supposed to happen before you and your partner say your vows.

Read letters from your family and friends
Have your family and friends write letters you can read at your elopement! This is a unique way to involve family and friends, particularly if you plan to elope with your partner.
However, if your family and friends are at your celebration, you can still have them write letters that you can read while you’re getting ready or right before your ceremony takes place. Ask your family and friends to write letters well before your celebration; don’t just spring it on them at the last minute.

Have your pet be a part of your ceremony
If you can’t imagine your pet not being a part of your ceremony, don’t fret! There are so many different ways you can make sure they are a significant part of your day. For instance, you can have your furry friend walk you down the aisle, be a flower escort, or your ring bearer. You can also do a first look with your pet before your ceremony or even write vows to read to your pet during your ceremony.

Elopement Ideas
After you’ve said “I do,” there are so many other fun, meaningful things you and your partner can do to commemorate starting this new, exciting chapter in your lives.
Here are some of my favorite ideas:
Get matching tattoos
You and your partner can head straight to the tattoo parlor after your ceremony and choose a design that means something to both of you.
Pop champagne
Popping champagne doesn’t just have to be reserved for your engagement photos. If you decide to pop champagne, always leave no trace and pick up your cork and trash.
Have a picnic
You and your partner can bring a picnic basket and blanket to enjoy after your ceremony or plan a luxury picnic. A luxury picnic is perfect if you want to add a little more to your ceremony and spend more time soaking in the beautiful scenery.
